Beefy Bison

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Its easy to get caught up in the trappings of day to day life and not make time for the simple pleasures and everyday wonders. My husband and I strive to make time not only for each other but also for enjoying the world around us. When we have a long weekend and the ability to do so we usually go on walkabout looking for those everyday wonders that most people forget.

On one such weekend, we went to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, where amongst other wildlife and nestled in a draw in the sprawling badlands, we found this lone bison who appeared to be basking in the sunlight. We were confused as to why the bull was so far away from any herd or any other bison. One of the Park Rangers explained to us that this individual was an old bull and that, in old age the bulls become increasingly solitary as they are out of their prime.

This seemed to us to be a commentary on life in general. The old bull had worked hard to live so long and deserved his respite and retirement. However, retirement also meant that he had outlived his prime and his usefulness to the herd, and is slowly marginalized. If bison were to have self awareness, would he be content or would he acknowledge any regret of not seeing or accomplishing all he set out to.

In a lot of ways this old bull, reminds my husband and I to take advantage of the time we have and to live life to the fullest extent possible. Life always throws curveballs, time is constantly being monopolized by others and by the drudgery of life and subsistence, and most of us wait until retirement to really enjoy life; more often than not that is too late.

So, when life presents you with an opportunity and time to see and experience everyday wonders, such as during a long weekend, don't sit around the house contemplating all the things you want to see or do "when you are retired." Go do and see those things and take advantage of the opportunity you know you have now.
